It’s All About the Breath

I find that when I am working with my more nervous gelding, it helps for me to take a minute before I approach him and pay attention to my breath. I try and slow my breathing down, and breathe from lower down rather than in my chest. In yoga this is a calming breath. I keep checking in while I’m working him to make sure my breath is still long and slow and deep. This helps me focus on staying calm myself and in turn it seems to assist him with his own reactivity. It also is a helpful tool if I get nervous (like at the start of a ride/race!) to just bring myself back to the moment, and to my breath. Easy, no tools, and you just need to practice doing it every day to have it be second nature. Sandy Cheek
